Internet Marketing and Technology

p0317143It is extraordinary to think that the internet as we know it did not arrive until the 1980s and even then only came to prominence about a decade later with the boom in home computer ownership. I can remember the computers with which I used at work in the 1980s and early 1990s. These were the BBC Computers which required the loading of a programme from a cassette tape each time you wished to use them. Having loaded the programme (which seemed to take an age) it was then necessary to ask the computer very specific questions. Every digit, every punctuation mark, every figure had to be entered with total accuracy or the machine used to go into a sulk. As far as I can recall we had no internet on our computers although the internet was in existence by then, but not in the way we know it today.

The computer on the Lunar Module which made the historic descent to the moon in 1969 had a, then, state of the art computer which had a mere fraction of the capability of an average laptop today. It was down to a glitch in the computer system which almost caused the mission to abort in the final few seconds of descent.

The development in the area of home computers and the internet has all occurred within the space of about 25 – 30 years which is quite incredible given how far we have travelled in that time. The innovations over those years have come thick and fast; new technology barely appearing before it was superseded by the next development. That is still the case today. This has changed the way the world works and communicates.  All kinds of new possibilities have been realised. One of those is the massive growth in E-Commerce and Internet Marketing. The internet, along with the capabilities of the modern PC, has made it possible for anyone to run a business from home. For many people this is where the greatest impact has been felt. Anyone can now start their own online business from their kitchen or shed with little in the way of start-up costs if they are prepared to learn the process. Setting up an online business gives many people the opportunity to work from home, either as a means of generating additional income or creating a whole new internet business.

Technology is very much at the heart of Internet Marketing, as the name suggests. It isn’t just the internet itself which has created the possibilities for creating and running an online business from home. Autoresponders have become an essential technical requirement as have the many clever devices that can enhance our websites and, therefore, our product promotion. We can now add audio and video to our online presentations, even set up Webinars to give live presentations to fellow marketers or potential customers.

Anyone involved in internet marketing needs to keep abreast of the new computer or online technology as it arises. You can guarantee that any new development will be immediately seized on by marketers who can see some way of applying it to their business. Just what the future holds for those of us who work in the cyber world of internet marketing is impossible to predict. One thing you can be certain of, however, is that the next development will be with us very, very soon, probably within the next few minutes, and there will be a way that it can be used in the running and/or promotion of our internet business.
