Internet Marketing versus Traditional Employment

The idea of owning and running their own business appeals to many, many people. The vision of being in control of their own destiny, of working for themselves and not being at the beck and call of others is the stuff that dreams are made of. The traditional wisdom is that we leave school or university and get a job; working as an employee for someone else and that we then stay there until we retire. We might get promotion within the company, or we might even change to a different company to get a promotion, but the pattern is that we sell our time, our energy and our skills to an employer in exchange for money for the whole of our working lives.

That way of living may give us an element of security but how many people in such a situation are ever paid what they are really worth. In exchange for the payment and the security an employee is, in many ways, owned by the company which employs him/her. I hasten to state at this point that I am not an anarchist advocating that we all rise up and overthrow the society we live in. I am merely pointing out the way that things are in the world of employment. This way of doing things suits a lot of people but there are many who would love to get control of their lives and their own destinies. Going into business for themselves is a good way to do this.

However, it is a big step to take and one which should not be taken lightly. It is all too easy when you read articles and sales material online to think that internet marketing is a get rich quick scheme. It most definitely is not! There is no question that it has the potential to bring in a very considerable income but it will take time and effort and involve the new marketer in a very steep learning curve. If you have the commitment and perseverance to do what needs to be done, it is a great way to earn a living. The potential rewards are great and the process is enjoyable.

Let’s compare the relative merits of life as an employee with that of a self-employed internet marketer working from home.

Employees begin the working day at a time and place stipulated by their employer. Internet marketers begin their working day whenever and wherever it suits them

Employees usually commute to their place of work by way of a traffic jam or an overcrowded train. Internet marketers stay at home.

Employees get a couple of weeks holiday a year at a time which suits their employer. Internet marketers take as many holidays as they want, whenever they want.

Employees do as they are told. Internet marketers do what they choose.

These are just four of the main advantages of running your own online business from home (and very attractive they are). However, don’t overlook the fact that your home business is your WORK and that your home is your WORKPLACE. The commitment required will be just as great as in an office or other place of employment, indeed, in the early stages of building your business, it will probably be greater. The one big difference is that you will be doing it for yourself, building your own dreams rather than somebody else’s dreams.

To strike out on your own and leave the security of employment is a very significant decision to take, but, if you succeed, it has the potential to give you the life that you really want.
