Online Business – Ups & Downs

Old Wooden AbacusEvery year sees more and more people turning to the internet with the intention of making their fortune. These people come from every walk of life, every income band and every type of background. Some come from a background of traditional business whilst others come with no business experience at all. All are looking to improve their lot.

Many of these new recruits have heard about the huge riches available on the internet and want their share. Rather like the 19th Century story of Dick Whittington who headed for London having heard that the streets were paved with gold only to find the streets dirty and poverty stricken. This is sadly the story we often hear of people who set out to make their fortune on the internet only to find it isn’t the “get-rich-quick-scheme” they had been led to believe.

Establishing a new online business is NOT EASY MONEY. Like anything worthwhile in life it requires work, commitment, a desire to learn and a resilience to face up to and overcome any problems which are almost certain to occur. Having the correct mind-set is of great importance too when setting up an online business. Unless a new recruit to internet marketing comes with the right attitude he/she is going to find life very tough indeed; – many fall by the wayside.

Thomas Edison is often quoted as saying: “Success is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration”. This is very true in many fields of human endeavour. It is certainly true in the realm of internet marketing, especially in the early stages of setting up a business. There is so much to learn, so many skills to acquire and so much time and effort required. It is a time when ‘stickability’ is so important. Some quickly become dispirited and impatient for success and leave to plough their furrow in other pastures.

I was told a joke years ago which has always stuck in my mind. It tells of an entrepreneur who dreamed of creating a great new drink to outsell Coca Cola. He tried one recipe which he named One Up. It failed miserably so he went back to the drawing board. A second recipe was devised and produced but again came failure. This drink he called Two Up. This went on as he created Three Up; – Four Up; – Five Up all without success. None of them sold. He then spent months of his time and almost all his remaining money on a project to finally crack the case. The result was Six Up. The inevitable failure ensued. At this point, in sheer frustration and with a broken heart he died. He didn’t live to see just how close he came. This may be a slightly silly story but it carries a very important message for new business people, persevere and you will get there in the end. Never give up as you never know just how close you are to a great breakthrough.

To tackle anything new and worthwhile in life requires a certain strength of character. Things which are shallow and superficial rarely have any lasting value. If you are prepared to put in the work and the effort, the “blood sweat and tears” of creating an online business, then go for it. Good luck in your venture.
