Product Licensing for Profit

I have written in earlier articles on how to find products to sell online. The two most popular ways being the selling of ready-made products by using Affiliate Marketing, or by creating our own products. The easiest way to do this second option is to write, or have written, e-books on topics around our particular niche. There is a third way, however, which involves the purchase of ready-made products which we can then sell under licence. This is fundamentally different from affiliate marketing. We will often find that things we buy on the internet come with permission to sell to others. This is great as we get the benefit from the product itself and then have the right to sell it to others and generate some income.

There are three main types of licence that we can use.

Licence No. 1 – Resale Rights

This is just like a normal retail business where you pay an upfront fee for the licence and then have the rights to buy the product at a fairly nominal cost price and retail it for a significant profit.

Licence No. 2 – Reproduction/Reprint Rights

With this type of licence you are given master copies of all the necessary material and have the right to duplicate and sell it. If the product you licence is a digital one (downloadable) obviously you are spared the expense of the reprinting or duplication.

Licence No. 3 – Master

This is the really powerful one and the one which has the greatest potential. With a Master Licence you have the right to take the product and turn it into your own. You have the rights to ‘Rebrand’ the item, giving it a new title, redesigning the artwork, etc. and then selling it as a completely new product. Not surprisingly, this kind of licence is the most expensive but it will usually be a particularly high-value product so the price for which you can sell it will reflect this. You even have the rights under a Master Licence to sell the Resale Rights and the Reproduction/Reprint Rights to others.

When dealing with any of these licences it is very important to read the licence agreement very carefully to ensure that you understand exactly what you can and can’t do. There are occasionally little differences between the licences within a particular category so do make sure that you carefully follow the parameters set out in the licence you have purchased.

The form in which licenced products are presented can be printed material, CDs, DVDs, digital products, indeed, any form of informational or software format. These products can then be sold via the internet as you would any other product or service. The business of “Internet Marketing” is the same whatever your products and whatever their origin.

All three licences are worth considering although the Master is, ultimately, the most profitable.
