Proverbs for New Internet Marketers

Triumph of businessmanThere are a number of proverbs which seem particularly appropriate when applied to the world of Internet Marketing. Let’s have a look at some of them in the context of creating an online business.

“Don’t try to run before you can walk”

I have heard a number of successful marketers speak either in person or on DVD. One piece of advice from every one of them when addressing those new to the business is, “take one step at a time”. Follow the plan laid out by your mentor in detail or follow the instructions closely if you are following a published schedule. Do not try to shortcut the plan or crucial things will be missed. This will catch you out further down the line. Setting up an internet marketing business requires a methodical approach, especially in the very early days. Do not try to ‘improve’ on the plan to speed things up, that way disaster lies; “Don’t try to run before you can walk”.

“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again”

There is quite a lot to take in when you first start to build your business. This is especially true for those who have little or no previous experiences of dealing with websites, autoresponders and other technical issues which are a very important aspect of the business. When I first started to explore the wonderful world of online business I must admit to a feeling of being overwhelmed by just how much new stuff I had to take on board. I had no mentor at that time, no one to consult for advice, so I had to find it all out for myself one way or another. I made a lot of mistakes! If you have a mentor to help you, as many do these days, you are very lucky to have someone at hand to guide you. However, whether you have a mentor or not, perseverance is vital if you are going to be successful; “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again”.

“Rome wasn’t built in a day”

When you begin to build your business, there will be an inevitable impatience to reach a point where the money starts to flow in, hopefully, in large amounts. Anything worthwhile is always going to take time and effort to establish. Don’t believe the hype which you read occasionally on the internet which offers you some scheme whereby you can earn £30,000 a month working 30 minutes a day and all by a week on Friday. It isn’t going to work like that. Even by following your plan it will take time to get your business up and running, certainly to a level where the income starts to become really significant. As I mentioned above, there is a lot to learn both in theory and in practice; “Rome wasn’t built in a day”.

“Patience is a virtue”

Having read what I have written above, I’m sure you have already got this particular message. Given the different circumstances in which new marketers find themselves, it is very much a case of working at your own speed. Some people have much more time to give to the business than others. However much time you have to give to your business consistency is the key. If you can only give one hour each day, that’s fine, so long as you make that hour as constructive as possible. Others will be in a position to work several hours each day, but the same issues apply. It isn’t just a question of how much time you are able to give; it is what you do with that time that really matters. Keep following your plan with a real sense of purpose and belief; “Patience is a virtue”.

“The Hare and the Tortoise”

This is one of Aesop’s Fables rather than a proverb, but it popped into my mind when I was writing the above paragraph. I’m sure it is a familiar story to almost everyone. The Hare charges off whilst the Tortoise begins his slow plod towards the finishing line. The Hare is so confident of winning he takes a break in the middle of the race. The Tortoise plods on to the finishing post whilst the Hare is having a nap and therefore wins the race. Probably inspired by this story is the song, “It’s not where you start it’s where you finish”, where, yet again, the emphasis is on consistency and commitment. The words of this song could very well be used as an anthem for all internet marketers.

Bear all this in mind whilst building your business and success will, ultimately, be yours. You will surely win the race!
